Big Read History in Context: Japanese Americans in the Mesilla Valley
Monday, February 22, 2021
Presented by local historian, Christopher Schurtz.
Description: Several farming families of Japanese descent made their homes in the Mesilla Valley in the first part of the 20th century, despite strong, anti-Japanese resistance from mostly Anglo farmers and local farming institutions. Though experiences varied, these families ultimately gained acceptance and greatly contributed to the community for decades to come.
