[ARCHIVED] "Science Café – Trees, Rocks and Water: A Recipe for Critical Zone Science"

Science Cafe

The Museum of Nature & Science and Sigma Xi present “Science Café – Trees, Rocks, and Water: a recipe for critical zone science,” with guest speaker Holly Barnard, Ph.D.

Dr. Barnard joins us via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 from the University of Colorado. Please contact education@las-cruces.org, or call 575/522-3120 for a link to the program or go to Zoom.us with webinar ID 87993731525.

Climate projections for the western U.S. include increased temperatures and more frequent drought events. This talk addresses fundamental questions such as: How does topography control the distribution of forests on the landscape; and how does groundwater recharge influence forest water use?

We will examine relationships between subsurface structure, groundwater storage, and forest ecology.

Dr. Holly Barnard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado. Her research is focused on improving our knowledge of how changes in climate and land-use will affect forest ecosystems and water resources.

Dr. Barnard investigates how forest processes affect water flow dynamics and pathways in soil and streams, and conversely, how water flow paths affect ecological function in mountainous areas. This bridging of hydrology and ecosystem science is key to developing sustainable management of water resources.

The Museum of Nature & Science, 411 N. Main St., is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1. For information, visit the Museum System website at: https://las-cruces.org/museums or follow us on Facebook and Instagram @LCMuseums.
