[ARCHIVED] Police Identify Victims in Two Separate Fatal Crashes

Police Update Lights

Las Cruces police have learned that the man struck Sunday by a vehicle on Idaho Avenue has succumbed to his injuries.

Shane Brown, 36, of Las Cruces, died Thursday at University Medical Center of El Paso. Brown’s death marks the second pedestrian fatality this week in Las Cruces.

About 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, police were called to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash near the intersection of Idaho Avenue and Locust Street. Police learned Shane Brown was struck by two vehicles and critically injured. Brown was transported to University Medical Center of El Paso with life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to those injuries on Thursday.

Traffic investigators learned Brown was walking along a sidewalk when he was first struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling west on Idaho. The investigation has revealed that the Jeep ran a stop sign at Idaho and Locust, briefly drove on the wrong side of the road and onto the sidewalk before striking a rock wall and then Brown.

The Jeep left the scene. Brown was on the ground, in the roadway, when he was struck by a second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle remained on scene and has been cooperative with police.

The Jeep was located, abandoned, sometime after the crash. Police learned the identity of Jeep’s driver and later made contact with her. The investigation into Sunday’s crash is ongoing.

Any witnesses to Sunday’s crash on Idaho Avenue are asked to call police at (575) 526-0795.

The second pedestrian crash that turned fatal this week occurred on Wednesday morning. Mark Herrick, 62, was crossing west Picacho Avenue when he was struck by a passing Chevrolet Tahoe shortly before 6:30 a.m. Herrick was pronounced dead on scene. Traffic investigators determined that Herrick was not on a sidewalk or a designated crossing area at the time of the crash. No charges are expected against the driver in Wednesday’s crash.
