Las Cruces voters approved the issuance of $23 million in General Obligation bonds for projects that include funds for affordable housing, the building of a new fire station on the east mesa, park improvements, and continued improvements at the East Mesa Recreation Complex.
In elections conducted Nov. 8, 2022, registered city voters decided the outcomes of four GO Bond questions. Those questions and vote totals include:
GO Bond Question 1: Shall the City of Las Cruces issue General Obligation Bonds, payable from property taxes, in an amount up to $10 million to acquire, plan, design, construct, and equip a new fire station facility (north of U.S. Highway 70 and east of Interstate 25), including acquisition of necessary land?
Yes 22,892 votes (74 percent)
No 7,881 (26 percent)
GO Bond Question 2: Shall the City of Las Cruces issue General Obligation Bonds, payable from property taxes, in an amount up to $5 million to acquire, plan, design, construct, and equip the Regional Community Recreation Complex, including acquisition of necessary land?
Yes 19,317 (63 percent)
No 11,368 (37 percent)
GO Bond Question 3: Shall the City of Las Cruces issue General Obligation Bonds, payable from property taxes, in an amount up to $6 million, and placed into the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, to provide resources to plan, design, construct, acquire, and preserve housing affordable for low- and moderate-income households, including acquisition of necessary land?
Yes 20,077 (65 percent)
No 10,849 (35 percent)
GO Bond Question 4: Shall the City of Las Cruces issue General Obligation Bonds, payable from property taxes, in an amount up to $2 million to renovate and improve existing parks and recreational facilities?
Yes 22,989 (74 percent)
No 8,059 (26 percent)
To issue the bonds, bond attorneys for the City will draft a Bond Ordinance that will be presented to the Las Cruces City Council for its consideration for approval. The estimated time to complete that process will be 90 to 120 days.
These projects will improve the quality of life for Las Cruces residents. The GO Bond questions approved by voters will not increase the city’s portion of property taxes.
