A public meeting regarding enhanced safety for downtown businesses will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 at the Rio Grande Theatre, 211 N. Main St.
The meeting will be moderated by the Las Cruces Police Department. Topics of discussion during the meeting will include the development and formation of a Downtown Business Watch Program, crime prevention, environmental design, procedural reporting, what is an emergency and what is a non-emergency.
In recent months, vandalism and acts of violence have been reported to Las Cruces police and city leaders by some downtown businesses. The goal of the upcoming meeting is to begin a dialogue to help ensure safety for downtown business leaders, their customers, and anyone who attends downtown events.
Some solutions that have been proposed and will be discussed at the meeting include increasing police patrols downtown; surveillance cameras; providing wash and bathroom stations for people experiencing homelessness; and removing rocks from downtown planters to prevent them from being used for vandalism.
