[ARCHIVED] Las Cruces Museums Present "Pull Up a Chair" with Guest Speaker Merranda Romero Marin

Merranda Romero Marin, Ph.D.

Join Merranda Romero Marin, Ph.D., at Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St., for her presentation, "Beyond cooking, cleaning, and sewing," at noon Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, for an engaging conversation on home economics.

Dr. Marin will discuss how the field of Home Economics has transformed into what is now called Family and Consumer Science. The presentation will highlight the work and efforts of female scientists who worked to bring lab sciences into the home of families by providing education around healthy human development, food safety, nutrition, etc. to enhance and improve the lives of community members.

The presentation also will highlight the gains the field has made throughout the U.S., but especially in New Mexico.

Dr. Marín is a Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Science at New Mexico State University in the program area of Human Development and Family Science. She is a licensed Psychologist as well as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, particularly within the context of the family system.

Her areas of research include understanding the impact of poverty on children and family systems, maternal mental well-being, the effects of trauma on family and community systems and resulting resilience mechanisms, as well as promoting first-generation college students to degree completion. She takes pride in being dedicated to understanding and promoting the strengths of vulnerable and diverse populations.

She currently has state and national leadership positions including serving on the New Mexico State Board of Psychologist Examiners. Also, she is Chair for the American Psychological Association’s Membership Board and is actively engaged in the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.

Currently, she also serves as the Interim Department Head for the Department of Family and Consumer Science at NMSU, where she oversees five program areas including: Family and Consumer Science Education, Fashion Merchandising and Design, Food Science and Technology, Human Development and Family Science, and Human Nutrition and Dietetic Science.

Future Pull Up a Chair Talks will be presented at noon the third Thursday of the month. Plan to join us at the Branigan Cultural Center, or on Zoom, for this exciting and educational series.
