The Upper Crooked River, near Post, Ore., was historically a perennial river, but now runs dry every summer due to a combination of land use changes, irrigation withdrawals, climate change, and channelization. A diverse coalition of stakeholders, from ranchers to environmental nonprofits, wants to know if floodplain reconnection can restore perennial flow to benefit society and wildlife, but this scientific question is far from settled. This presentation addresses not only the physical science of floodplain reconnection hydrology, but also the complex socio-political context of the project.
Skuyler Herzog is an Assistant Professor of Natural Resources Program at Oregon State University-Cascades, in Bend, Ore. Skuyler is a hydrologist specializing in groundwater-surface water interactions.
Like the water quality problems he studies, Skuyler’s research does not fit neatly into traditional management sectors. He works with water practitioners, stakeholders, and regulators to translate scientific results into practical management solutions.
