The City of Las Cruces is accepting applications for its Historic Preservation Commission. The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) evaluates and reviews the implementation of the City’s historic preservation practices and policies. Established by the City Council in December 2019 in conjunction with the amendment to the municipal code to adopt a historic preservation ordinance, the Commission serves as the City’s review board to consider the effects on cultural properties.

The Historic Preservation Commission convenes each month for a public meeting to review and evaluate any open Certificate of Appropriateness applications that potentially will affect buildings and property located within the City’s historic districts. Commission members may expect to meet in work sessions throughout the calendar year. Interested individuals desirous to serve on the Historic Preservation Commission are preferred to possess a background in the fields of architecture, history, preservation law, architectural history, historic preservation, real estate, archaeology, land-use planning, structural engineering, landscape architecture, or related fields. Residency within a historic district and / or involvement in a history-based organization would also qualify an interested candidate for service on the Commission.

The Historic Preservation Commission shall consist of seven members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Terms of appointments run for three years, and Commissioners are limited to two consecutive three-year terms, but shall become eligible for reappointment after a minimum of a one-year layoff from the Commission. Eligible members may reside within the corporate limits of the City or in the extraterritorial zone.

Applications may be obtained on the City’s website: https://onboard.las-cruces.org/board/2648. For more information, contact the City Clerk’s office at (575) 541-2115 or email crivera@lascruces.gov.
