museum of nature and science

The Museum of Nature & Science and Sigma Xi present “Science Café – Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions in the Hyporheic Zone,” with guest speaker Liwen Wu, Ph.D. from the Eco-Environmental Research Laboratory, Westlake University in China.

Dr. Wu will join us via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2023. Please contact education@lascruces.gov or call 575/522-3120 for a link to the program or go to zoom.us with webinar ID 85813593921.

Interactions between rivers and their surrounding aquifers vary significantly which can limit the exchange of water, energy, and materials. In this talk, Dr. Wu will introduce the principles of groundwater and surface water interactions in riverbeds, followed by an example focusing on the implications of seasonal river-groundwater disconnections for streambed exchange in arid and semi-arid environments such as those found in our region.

Dr. Liwen Wu is currently a postdoctoral researcher in Eco-Environmental Research Laboratory, Westlake University in China. She earned a doctoral degree in Geography (Dr. rer. nat.) from the department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Humboldt University of Berlin and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from KTH-Royal Institute of Technology.
