[ARCHIVED] Hyundai and Kia Owners Receive Theft Alarm Software Update

Kia

Las Cruces police want owners of Hyundai and Kia automobiles to be on the lookout for new software that updates their vehicle’s theft alarm system.

The new software, announced recently by Hyundai and Kia, extends the length of the vehicle’s audible alarm from 30 seconds to one minute. The software update also requires the key to be in the ignition switch before the engine can be started.

Both companies are rolling out their free software updates. Hyundai also plans to provide its customers with a free window decal that indicates the vehicle is equipped with anti-theft protection.

The Las Cruces Police Department encourages owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles to install the new software at their earliest convenience.

Owners of these vehicles should ask their local dealer for the software update. Customers can also contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 or Kia at 1-800-333-4542 for more information.

In 2023, the Las Cruces Police Department took 49 theft reports of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. During the year, 28 Hyundai vehicles were reported stolen while 21 Kia vehicles were taken. Of the 49 stolen Hyundai and Kia vehicles, 36 were ultimately located by law enforcement and returned to their respective owners.

Las Cruces police encourage owners of all automobiles to consider installing and utilizing an audible anti-theft alarm system that also prevents the engine from starting without a key. Police also recommended always locking doors when leaving the car unattended and refraining from leaving keys inside the vehicle.
