Join the Branigan Cultural Center for a lecture
by Jesus Padilla entitled “Truth and Testimony” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October
5, 2019.
In 1998, the local gay community organized an
effort to bring the AIDS Quilt to Las Cruces. The effort required
fundraising for an event that was considered taboo in a transformative
decade. The quilt, which signified memories of those that lost the battle
to AIDS, eventually made its way to Las Cruces after months of preparation and
discussion over the safety and security of those involved. Padilla will be
providing a speech on the truths and testimonies of what it was like to
participate in the coordinating of these efforts and the significance of the
AIDS Quilt.
After the lecture, attendees are invited to
tour the exhibition Voices of Change: LGBTQ Activism on exhibit at the
Branigan Cultural Center through October 26, 2019.
The Branigan Cultural Center is located at 501
N. Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and
