[ARCHIVED] Las Cruces Museums Celebrate the Third Annual New Mexico Juneteenth Jazz Arts Festival

Juneteenth Jazz Arts Festival

Branigan Cultural Center and New Mexico Music Commissioner Derrick Lee present the third annual “New Mexico Juneteenth Jazz Arts Festival,” from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Rio Grande Theatre, 211 N. Main St.

There also will be performances from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St.; from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts, at New Mexico State University; and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2023, at Atkinson Recital Hall, at NMSU. Check Facebook at Juneteenth Jazz for more details.

Admission is free to festival events. Celebrate and create community awareness for this national holiday – which is one of America’s oldest.

Listen to incredible musicians from the region perform jazz, as the lineup of performers includes the Colin McAllister Group and the Billy Townes Group.

“This music is rooted in the traditions of improvisational expression, storytelling, and community, and has a rich history that has shaped our nation,” said New Mexico Music Commissioner Derrick Lee, who also is the festival organizer. “This music is alive, and as it evolves, it continues to evolve us. Jazz history is Black history. Jazz History is American history.”

The Rio Grande Theatre is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1. For information, visit the Museums System website at: www.lascruces.gov/museums or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @LCMuseums.
