[ARCHIVED] NR: “Book Talk: McCarthyism vs Clinton Jencks” at the Branigan Cultural Center

Come to Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St., for a discussion of “McCarthyism vs. Clinton Jencks,” by Raymond Caballero, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.

The book talk will focus on Clinton Jencks, who led the Empire Zinc strike in Grant County, New Mexico, in 1950. Three years after the strike, Mr. Jencks was arrested, charged, and convicted with falsely denying that he was a Communist. His conviction was overturned in Jencks vs. United States, in 1957, in a decision that mandated all hidden witness statements must be provided to the accused, increasing the effectiveness of cross-examination on all following court cases.

Mr. Caballero was born in El Paso, Texas, and practiced law, where he argued before the Supreme Court. Now, Mr. Caballero lives in Oregon, where he uses his legal expertise as he researches and authors books featuring Southwest history. In addition to “McCarthyism vs Clinton Jencks,” he is the author of “Orozco: The Life and Death of a Mexican Revolutionary.”

The Branigan Cultural Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 36. For information, call 575/541-2154 or visit the City’s Museum System website.
