Join us at the Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St., for our newest exhibition, “Artistas de las Fronterizas – Borderland Contemporary Artists.”
Sixteen contemporary artists from local borderland communities, including Las Cruces, El Paso, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, come together in this colorful and expressive exhibit to showcase their work as prominent Borderland artists. The exhibit is on view from Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, to Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023.
An opening reception will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 6, 2023, with artists in attendance to discuss their artwork and their respective experiences as artists.
Participating artists were selected from a 2021 call for art for artists from minoritized communities by the Las Cruces Museum of Art, where their artwork was presented virtually during a period of 13 months on the Las Cruces Museums social media platforms. In “Artistas de las Fronterizas – Borderland Contemporary Artists,” artists showcase their newest work in the physical space of the museum’s gallery.
Artists present a variety of unique, symbolic, and meaningful pieces that reflect their work as regionally distinct artist and how their own experiences as part of a minoritized community have shaped their perspective as artists. Works include 2D pieces using watercolor, monotype, oil, acrylic, pastels, photography, handcrafted mixed mediums, and more.
This exhibit highlights works from minoritized communities, focusing on artists with Hispanic and Latino origins. The use of the phrase “minoritized communities” aims to highlight the intersectionality of populations in the U.S. that face marginalization, erasure, exclusion, and denial of rights.
The Museum of Art celebrates these upcoming and prominent Hispanic and Latino artists, showcasing their importance to the Borderland art world and its culture.
The Museum of Art is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission fee.
The museum is accessible via RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1. For information, visit the Museums System website at www.lascruces.gov/museums or call (575/)541-2137.
