Eight alternate early voting convenience centers, including four in Las Cruces, are now open for the 2019 local election. The election will include races for mayor, City Council districts 1, 2 and 4, and presiding Municipal Court judge.
The four city locations are at Las Cruces City Hall, 700 N. Main St.; Sonoma Elementary School, 4201 Northrise Drive; Corbett Center Student Union, at New Mexico State University; and the Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Boulevard.
Alternate Early Voting Centers are also at Anthony City Hall, 820 State Highway 478, in Anthony; Delores C. Wright Educational Center, 400 E. Lisa Drive, in Chaparral; Hatch High School, 170 E. At City Hall, early voting will be conducted in the conference room of the City Clerk’s Office, at the southeast corner of the lobby at City Hall.
This election marks the first time Ranked Choice Voting will be used for municipal races. With Ranked Choice Voting, voters will get to rank the candidates from favorite to least favorite. For a candidate to win, they must receive a majority of the vote, 50 percent plus one. If a candidate gets a majority of first preference votes, they win. If no candidate gets a majority of first preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first preference votes is eliminated. Voters who picked that candidate as the first choice would have their second preference vote count.
The City of Las Cruces has produced informational pamphlets about Ranked Choice Voting that are available to the public for free at the following locations:
