[ARCHIVED] Hit-and-Run Crash Claims Life of Las Cruces Man

A 58-year-old pedestrian is dead and Las Cruces police are looking for the drivers of two vehicles suspected of striking the man Friday evening on north Solano Drive.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the crash on the 1400 block of north Solano Drive. Police arrived to find the 58-year-old man on the road with multiple injuries. The victim was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim’s name will not be released until his family has been properly notified.

Traffic investigators learned the victim was walking across Solano, from west to east, when he was initially struck by a black pickup. Witnesses told police the victim was then hit by a silver car. Both vehicles were traveling north on Solano and both vehicles fled without stopping.

Police believe the first vehicle that struck the victim is a black 2003 to 2007 Chevrolet single-cab pickup. The second vehicle is believed to be a white or silver car. Both vehicles will have visible damages to their front ends and, possibly, to their sides.

Drivers of those vehicles may try to conceal the damage or the vehicles. Drivers may possibly park their vehicle inside a garage or in a backyard when they don’t normally. They may also change their regular routine such as not going to work or skipping a family gathering.

Anyone with information on either vehicle involved in Friday’s crash, or information on the driver of either vehicle, is asked to call Las Cruces police immediately at (575) 526-0795. Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous may also call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Update

A pedestrian who died as a result of Friday’s hit-and-run crash on north Solano Drive has been identified as 58-year-old Jose Alberto Carillo of Las Cruces.

Traffic investigators learned Carillo was walking across Solano, from west to east, when he was initially struck by a black pickup shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, near the 1400 block of north Solano Drive. Witnesses told police Carillo was then hit by a silver car. Both vehicles were traveling north on Solano and both vehicles fled without stopping.

Late Friday evening, a 78-year-old woman called police to say she was the driver of a silver car, determined to be a Hyundai Elantra, that struck Carillo. On Saturday morning, a 34-year-old man went to the Las Cruces Police Department and told officers he was the driver of a black 2002 GMC pickup involved in the crash.

Traffic investigators interviewed both drivers and obtained warrants to collect evidence from both vehicles. The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
