Just a friendly reminder to “fall back” and reset clocks one hour earlier on Sunday. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019.
Daylight Saving Time in the United States is the practice of setting the clock forward – or back – by one hour during the warmer part of the year, so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Most areas of the U.S. observe daylight saving time. But most of Arizona, Hawaii and the overseas territories of American Samoa, Guam the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not observe daylight saving time.
The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the system of uniform daylight saving time throughout the U.S.
Daylight saving time will return at 2 a.m. March 8, 2020.
With the time chance the Las Cruces Fire Department encourages residents to install new batteries in their smoke alarms when setting clocks back an hour. Most smoke alarms are powered by a single 9-volt battery. Las Cruces and Doña Ana County residents who need 9-volt batteries for smoke or carbon monoxide detectors can get as many as nine free batteries per household at most Las Cruces fire stations. The free batteries can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2. The batteries will be available at:
- Fire Station 1, 201 E. Picacho Ave.
- Fire Station 2, 1199 E. Foster Road.
- Fire Station 3, 390 N. Valley Drive.
- Fire Station 4, 2802 E. Missouri Ave.
- Fire Station 5, 5998 Bataan Memorial East
- Fire Station 6, 2750 Northrise Drive.
- Fire Station 8, 550 N. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.
LCFD also encourages homeowners to test smoke alarms to ensure they are in proper working order. To check a smoke alarm's operation, simply press and hold the alarm’s “test” button. If it beeps, or rings loudly, it’s properly working. Consumers should avoid testing an alarm by using a candle or matches placed under the detector as repeated use of smoke to activate the device can cause them to fail when an actual fire occurs.
