[ARCHIVED] Fire Burns Shed on East Mesa

Police Badge

Las Cruces firefighters extinguished a fire that destroyed a shed on the city’s East Mesa Monday evening.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, firefighters and police were dispatched to a structure fire on the 4900 block of Davis Road on the city’s East Mesa. Police arrived first, cleared the scene and located a man who initially appeared to be injured in the fire.

Firefighters had the shed fire under control within about 20 minutes and had it extinguished by about 10:30 p.m.

Firefighters determined the property owner was not injured by the fire and he declined medical attention. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Fire investigators learned that the property owner set a small fire inside the shed, for warmth, while working in it. It’s believed that small fire spread to a box of plastics and then to other parts of the shed. Fire investigators learned the property owner tried to move the box outdoors but was unable to do so.

The shed fire was determined to be accidental with damage estimates at approximately $1,000.
