Pedestrian Crash on University Avenue Proves Fatal

A pedestrian crossing University Avenue in a poorly lighted area was struck by a vehicle Monday evening and died after being transported to a local hospital.

About 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, a 38-year-old woman was walking south across University Avenue in an area between Triviz Drive and I-25. The pedestrian was not in a designated crosswalk and the roadway there is not well lighted. A 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by an 18-year-old man, was traveling east on University and struck the pedestrian.

Las Cruces police, fire and ambulance responded to the scene. The woman was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver of the pickup remained on scene and was cooperative with police.

Alcohol or excessive speed are not considered to be contributing factors in the crash. The incident is still under investigation by Las Cruces police but, at this time, no charges are expected in this case.

The name of the victim will be released once proper notifications have been made to her family.
