This month’s American City & County magazine featured Las Cruces and two other cities in writer Peter Dye’s article Smart Cities are Solar Cities. Dye shares how cities have implemented solar power systems at a record pace in recent years. Las Cruces’ success is attributed to setting ambitious renewable energy goals thanks to the City’s leadership.
Mayor Ken Miyagishima recognizes that this energy transition is already happening stating, “We want our community to ride this wave rather than be swamped beneath it.”
By 2022, the Las Cruces municipality will generate 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources either owned or in partnership with Ameresco’s Power Purchase Agreement.
Las Cruces is also proud to be the first city in the state of New Mexico to achieve a Solsmart Gold designation with additional recognition for its efforts to make the inspection process simple and convenient.
All these accomplishments continue to demonstrate the City’s commitment to sustainable practices including the development of renewable energy jobs and use.
