[ARCHIVED] Safer Buildings, Safer Communities, Safe World

“Safer Buildings, Safer Communities, Safe World,” the theme for Building Safety Month, May 2020, raises awareness about the importance of safe and resilient construction, fire prevention, disaster moderation, and new technologies in the construction industry. Building Safety Month 2020 encourages appropriate steps everyone can take to ensure the safety of the built environment and recognizes that the implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies has saved lives and protected homes and businesses.

“Our confidence in the structural integrity of buildings that make up our community is achieved through the devotion of vigilant guardians in the construction industry, who work year-round to ensure the safe construction of buildings,” said Larry Nichols, Director, Community Development Department. “These guardians are dedicated professionals who bring together local, state and federal officials to create and implement the highest-quality codes to protect us. Building Safety Month brings awareness to their commitment.”

The City’s Community Development Department supports that commitment by offering tools such as user-friendly, online one-stop shop for builders called ACCELA. The portal provides access to permits, codes and inspection reports for major construction as well as residential projects. During the COVID-19 health crisis, social distancing is supported through Interactive video inspections, an alternative to on-site inspections that require prompt service, a follow up after an initial on-site inspection, or scheduling a more specific inspection time.

The City of Las Cruces Community Development Department’s Building Safety program, in partnership with the City’s Fire Department, recognizes that community growth and strength depends on the safety of the homes, buildings, and infrastructure that serve our community, both in everyday life and in times of natural disaster. For more information, please contact Community Development at 575/528-3059 or go to las-cruces.org/184/Community-Development The ACCELA portal can be found at https://aca.accela.com/lascruces/Default.aspx
