[ARCHIVED] Mayor and City Council Vote No on the Extension of Emergency Proclamation

At a special meeting today, the Las Cruces City Council voted unanimously (0-7) against the extension of the emergency proclamation issued by Mayor Ken Miyagishima on Friday, May 29providing guidance and information for the reopening of restaurants, movie theatres, gyms and nail and hair salons in Las Cruces.  

The proclamation, set to expire today, June 1, is now defunct. The term of the Mayor’s emergency proclamations are 72 hours and City Council could have voted to extend it up to 14 days. 

On March 27, City Council approved an emergency declaration ordinance that provides the mayor and mayor pro tem the authority to take immediate action for the protection of life and property, and for the preservation of public peace, safety, health, welfare, and for the continuity of efficient government operations.   

The mayor issued the proclamation Friday alongside the Governor’s extension of New Mexico’s Public Health Order, with amendments to include guidance on the reopening of certain businesses.
