[ARCHIVED] Special City Council Meeting to Discuss Resolution on Face Coverings on June 8

City Council

Las Cruces City Council has scheduled a special meeting for Monday, June 8, immediately following the regularly scheduled Work Session at 1 p.m., to discuss a resolution for the Council’s consideration. The Resolution encourages the public to wear face coverings in retail and commercial business in the city limits due to the Corona Virus pandemic.

The Resolution, if approved, is in lieu of Ordinance No. 2929, which would have required face coverings to be worn by the public in retail and commercial businesses with exceptions (aligned with the State of New Mexico Covid-19 Public Health Order) for eating, drinking, exercising, children under three-years-old or those with other personal health concerns prohibiting the use of a face covering. Under the Ordinance, if enacted, any violations would have constituted a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $500 and/or 90 days in jail. Council prefers voluntary compliance over enforcement and does not want the effort to be punitive, which the proposed Resolution would encourage.

City Council tabled the Ordinance indefinitely at a special meeting today, Friday, June 5, and will instead focus on the resolution which holds no punitive consequences.
