The Las Cruces City Council will be discussing the 8 Can’t Wait Campaign at a Work Session scheduled for June 15 immediately following the regular City Council Meeting starting at 1p.m. The campaign educates for policies that reduce killings by police and helps to save lives. The eight policies include:
- Ban Chokeholds and Strangleholds
- Require De-escalation
- Require Warning Before Shooting
- Requires Exhaust all Alternatives Before Shooting
- Duty to Intervene
- Ban Shooting at Moving Vehicles
- Require Use of Force Continuum
- Require Comprehensive Reporting
Mayor Ken Miyagishima said “I would like to thank the members of our community for inquiring about the 8 Can’t Wait initiative. Las Cruces Police Chief Patrick Gallagher and Interim-City Manager David Maestas have scheduled a work session on this very important initiative on June 15,” he added.
Also invited to provide commentary will be Dr. Bobbie Green, President of the NAACP (DAC) and Dr. Laura Gutierrez-Spencer, Director of Chicano programs at NMSU.
