[ARCHIVED] 8 Can’t Wait Campaign to be discussed at June 15 work session

City Council

The Las Cruces City Council will be discussing the 8 Can’t Wait Campaign at a work session scheduled for Monday, June 15 immediately following the regular City Council meeting starting at 1 p.m. The campaign educates for policies that reduce killings by police and helps to save lives. The eight policies include:

  • Ban Chokeholds and Strangleholds
  • Require De-escalation
  • Require Warning Before Shooting
  • Requires Exhaust all Alternatives Before Shooting
  • Duty to Intervene
  • Ban Shooting at Moving Vehicles
  • Require Use of Force Continuum
  • Require Comprehensive Reporting

“I would like to thank the members of our community for inquiring about the 8 Can’t Wait initiative," Mayor Ken Miyagishima said. "Las Cruces Police Chief Patrick Gallagher and Interim-City Manager David Maestas have scheduled a work session on this very important initiative."

Also invited to provide commentary will be Bobbie Green, President of the NAACP of Doña Ana County, and Laura Gutierrez-Spencer, Director of Chicano programs at New Mexico State University.
