The Las Cruces City Council will be discussing the 8 Can’t Wait Campaign at a work session scheduled for Monday, June 15 immediately following the regular City Council meeting starting at 1 p.m. The campaign educates for policies that reduce killings by police and helps to save lives. The eight policies include:
- Ban Chokeholds and Strangleholds
- Require De-escalation
- Require Warning Before Shooting
- Requires Exhaust all Alternatives Before Shooting
- Duty to Intervene
- Ban Shooting at Moving Vehicles
- Require Use of Force Continuum
- Require Comprehensive Reporting
“I would like to thank the members of our community for inquiring about the 8 Can’t Wait initiative," Mayor Ken Miyagishima said. "Las Cruces Police Chief Patrick Gallagher and Interim-City Manager David Maestas have scheduled a work session on this very important initiative."
Also invited to provide commentary will be Bobbie Green, President of the NAACP of Doña Ana County, and Laura Gutierrez-Spencer, Director of Chicano programs at New Mexico State University.
