The Las Cruces City Council with officers of the Las Cruces Police Department discussed the 8 Can’t Wait Campaign at a special work session on Monday, June 15. Police Department staff covered the specifics of each item and detailed those they implement. The eight policies include:
- Ban Chokeholds and Strangleholds
- Require De-escalation
- Require Warning Before Shooting
- Requires Exhaust all Alternatives Before Shooting
- Duty to Intervene
- Ban Shooting at Moving Vehicles
- Require Use of Force Continuum
- Require Comprehensive Reporting
Also invited to provide commentary was Bobbie Green, President of the NAACP of Doña Ana County, Laura Gutierrez-Spencer, Director of Chicano programs at New Mexico State University and Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart.
Councilors followed up with several questions and requests that will be the beginning of ongoing discussions between the City Council, police, and the public on procedures and policies in the Las Cruces Police Department.
