A drive-through registration for the Las Cruces Police Department’s sixth annual Youth Leadership Summer Camp begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, at Lynn Middle School, 950 S. Walnut St.

The free camp – modified this year to help ensure safety during the Covid-19 public health emergency – includes four 1-week sessions, from Monday through Friday, set to begin July 6, July 13, July 20 and July 27. Parents or guardians can register their youth, ages 11 to 15 or at least entering the sixth grade, for only one of the four sessions. The camp is limited to 25 students per session.

The Youth Leadership Summer Camp will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and is a collaborative effort with Dr. Blanca E. Araujo, the Stan Fulton Endowed Chair in Education at New Mexico State University. Much of the camp will be at Lynn Middle School but campers will also visit New Mexico State University.

The camp provides youth with CPR and First Aid training, teamwork building, archery, fishing, crime scene investigation, D.A.R.E. and DWI simulations, anti-bullying and harassment lessons, and other activities similar to the Character Counts module. All events will follow the Governor’s guidelines on social distancing and safety during the public health emergency.

The camp is free and includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch each day - breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. Participants will receive a free camp T-shirt, water bottle, mask, and gloves. Masks must be worn during the camp and hand-washing stations will also be provided. Camp directors, LCPD School Resource Officers, will help ensure camp participants are safe by following social distancing guidelines and sanitizing facilities and equipment before each new session.

Parents or guardians must register students in-person, during the drive-through registration at Lynn Middle School, 950 S. Walnut St. The entrance for the drive-through registration will be on Nevada Avenue going east toward the Lynn Middle School cafeteria. Camps tend to fill fast, so parents or guardians are encouraged to arrive early to select session dates that best suit their summer schedule.

No phone or email registrations will be accepted. Parents or guardians should bring proof of the student’s age, school, and grade entering the upcoming school year and the student’s T-shirt size. For information about the camp, contact Sgt. Vincent Shadd by email at LCPDYouthcamp@las-cruces.org.
