If you’ve ever wanted a career with an organization like Las Cruces Utilities (LCU), but don’t quite have all the qualifications…now is the time to take another look. LCU is searching for good workers willing to be trained to achieve the necessary certifications for specific jobs. It’s called “conditional” hiring.

Jake Holes is one LCU employee who has taken full advantage of conditional hiring to move up and create a long-term career plan in the LCU Wastewater Line of Business. This is not just a job; it’s a full career with all the benefits of working for a City of Las Cruces (City) department.

Holes began with the LCU Internship Program while taking classes at Doña Ana Community College (DACC). He earned his Associate Degree in Water Technology, then LCU conditionally employed him while he worked to get his Level 3 certification.

“What is appealing about LCU is hands-on work, doing the maintenance to make sure things run well all the time,” said Holes. His routine includes checking all the processes at Jacob Hands Wastewater Treatment Facility, from pumps and motors to spraying out the algae in settling tanks. “I’m part of the team,” he said, “that processes 8 to 9 million gallons of wastewater every day, restoring it to a clean state.”

The Levels, 1 through 4, are statewide certifications that allow operators of water and wastewater to learn the water-cleaning process, the mechanics of pumps and motors, and the biochemistry behind the filtration of wastewater to purified water.

Holes achieved his first two Levels at DACC, worked on his Level 3 as part of his conditional hire as a crew member, and is now working on his Level 4 as a crew leader. Typically, workers have up to one year to complete their next Level requirement while on the job.

If you are a great worker with a great attitude and willing to earn certifications, but don’t quite meet all the qualifications for a career at LCU, LCU is still interested in you. Find out more at

LCU can be reached at 575-528-3500 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. LCU provides services to approximately 100,000 Las Cruces residents and businesses.
