On behalf of me and my family, I am sending a brief note of thanks and appreciation for the incredible assistance and responsiveness we recently received from the Parks & Recreation Department, especially from Mr. Rudy Trevino.
My family has homes and farmland off of Burke Road, and after irrigating some pecan trees in early June, we noticed that a community irrigation ditch was severely breached, apparently from damage associated with tunneling by ground squirrels. This unfortunate outflow of water completely washed out part of the adjacent service road, which runs along a stormwater drainage canal across from the Outfall Channel Trail between Roadrunner Lane and Burke Road. Prior to our next irrigation opportunity, it would be necessary to repair the community irrigation ditch; which would first require repair of the damaged service road.
We initially contacted the Elephant Butte Irrigation District (EBID), which informed us that no part of this issue was under their jurisdiction. Eventually, we were directed to the Parks & Recreation Department for guidance based on its expertise with matters related to the Outfall Channel Trail. We were fortunate to make contact with Mr. Trevino, who is extremely knowledgeable about the multitude of organizational authority, property, environmental and agricultural concerns that all factored into this location-specific issue.
Mr. Trevino went above and beyond our expectation, including meeting with us on-site (June 25th) to review and assess this situation, only minutes after discussing the matter by phone; and he immediately set in motion the necessary coordination efforts to initiate the next steps in repairing the service road by the Streets & Traffic Operations Dept (City of Las Cruces), which was completed the very next day (June 26th). This immediate response allowed us to secure a contractor to repair the irrigation ditch, currently underway, which will be completed in time for the next scheduled irrigation.
While we expected this to be a somewhat complicated and lengthy process, we have been extremely pleased with the amazing response from the City of Las Cruces, largely due to the dedication, coordination, and efforts of Mr. Trevino. It is clear to us that the Parks & Recreation Department exemplifies community leadership and extraordinary care that citizens of Las Cruces are lucky to have.
