[ARCHIVED] City Council Extends Mayor's Emergency Proclamation on Face Coverings

City Council

The Las Cruces City Council has adopted and extended the Mayor’s Emergency Proclamation 2020-05 which requires patrons and employees of all businesses within the Las Cruces city limits to wear face coverings when appropriate social distancing of at least 6 feet cannot be maintained. The council’s action came at a special meeting on Monday, July 6, 2020.

The Mayor’s Emergency Proclamation 2020-05 was issued on July 3, 2020 and effective at 12:01am July 4th. It can be read here.

As part of the Mayor’s Emergency Proclamation, business owners who violate the proclamation will face a $100 fine for every individual within the place of business who is not wearing an appropriate face covering. But fines shall not exceed $500 per occurrence.

The Mayor’s Emergency Proclamation was set to expire Monday, July 6. However, the Council has the authority to extend the Emergency Proclamation as it determines is necessary.

On March 27, City Council approved an emergency declaration ordinance that provides the mayor and mayor pro-tem the authority to take immediate action for the protection of life and property, and for the preservation of public peace, safety, health, welfare, and for the continuity of efficient government operations.
