[ARCHIVED] Parks Upkeep on Forefront of Parks & Recreation Priorities

Park

The City of Las Cruces – specifically the Parks & Recreation Department – is launching a new way community members can hear messages directly from the director. The Director’s Message is a new feature on the City’s website, www.las-cruces.org, where people can hear about the latest topics of concern over a periodic series of video clips.

The first in the series for Parks and Recreation is about park maintenance. As the state loosens pandemic restrictions and more city parks re-open, the Parks and Recreation Department continues to expand its parks’ maintenance schedule towards its normal capacity, which is vital to the health of the turf, trees, and beauty of city parks.

“Our park crews were not considered essential workers during the pandemic shutdown,” said Sonya Delgado, Director of Parks and Recreation Department. “And I am proud of how well we have been able to keep to our adapted maintenance schedule with a skeleton crew, in preparation for reopening more public spaces when that time comes.”

The City has 90 parks, 1,500 acres of parkland, 282 acres of maintained landscaped area, more than 100 acres of athletic fields, and 37 miles of multipurpose trails, not to mention many other fields, courts, gardens, and facilities. The park’s crew follows 13 different maintenance schedules which do not include sports fields, construction, or right of way /medians maintenance.

“We are really pleased to be able to offer this series of videos to the community in the hopes that they will help the public better understand our operations and provide better transparency in our work,” Delgado added.

Watch this short video message by the Director of Parks and Recreation in its entirety and find more information about park maintenance at www.las-cruces.org/LCParksRec. For a complete list of currently opened parks, go to www.las-cruces.org/Covid19ParkSchedule. The Parks and Recreation Department can be contacted directly at 575/541-2550 or email ParksandRecAdmin@las-cruces.org.
