The Las Cruces Police Department is hosting a Backyard BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament on June 15 with proceeds benefitting New Mexico Special Olympics.
Registration for the Backyard BBQ Cookoff will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Apodaca Park, 801 W. Madrid Street. Chefs can begin cooking their best pork or beef ribs at 9 a.m. with judging to begin at 3 p.m. The entry fee for the cookoff is $50 per entry with prizes to be awarded to the champion chef. Participants must provide their own grill and ribs for the cookoff.
Special Olympics athletes and local celebrities will serve as judges for the cookoff.
Registration for the Cornhole Tournament will start at 9 a.m. that day with the tournament is set to begin at 10 a.m. The double-elimination, two-person team tournament has a $40 entry fee and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.< br />
All proceeds from the Backyard BBQ Cookoff and Cornhole Tournament will benefit New Mexico Special Olympics. T-shirts and other items will be available for purchase, and donations can be made to New Mexico Special Olympics.
The public is invited to the daylong, free event that will feature refreshments, activities and DJ Mike Gamboa providing music. Las Cruces Codes Enforcement will also have a Bicycle Rodeo safety course for children. As with all City parks, alcohol is not permitted during the event.
