The City of Las Cruces will conduct its fourth free drive-through mask distribution event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 14 at Vista Middle School, 4465 Elks Drive.

Reusable cloth masks for adults and kids will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis as part of the City’s ongoing campaign "Mask Up Las Cruces."

The COVID-19 pandemic has been stressful and isolating for many people. Gatherings during the upcoming holidays can be an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 epidemic is worsening, and small household gatherings are an important contributor to the rise in COVID-19 cases.

“The best gift you can give your family is staying healthy. And we want to ensure that if you do not already have a mask, that we can provide one to you free of charge,” said Lynn Gallagher, Quality of Life Director.

There is no cost, ID, or registration required to pick up a mask, but community members must remain in their vehicles and roll down their windows as they approach the distribution tables. If you are ill or exhibiting symptoms of illness, please contact your primary health care provider and avoid activities. No walk-ups or bicyclists will be permitted at this event.

In compliance with all public health orders, staff and volunteers will be wearing personal protective equipment and social distancing requirements will be observed at all times.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently provided guidance on holiday gatherings and what Americans need to be aware of before traveling, hosting, or attending parties - or just gathering with family and friends during the Thanksgiving holiday, the information can be found at the CDC website www.cdc.gov/coronavirus.

According to the CDC, the “safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is to celebrate with people in your household.”

The CDC also asks people to avoid the following higher-risk activities to help prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19:

  • Going shopping in crowded stores just before, on, or after Thanksgiving.
  • Participating or being a spectator at a crowded race.
  • Attending crowded parades.
  • Attending large indoor gatherings with people from outside of your household.
  • Using alcohol or drugs that may alter judgment and make it more difficult to practice COVID-19 safety measures.
