[ARCHIVED] Mayfield Students Lend a Hand to Keep Las Cruces Beautiful

Mayfield High School Citizenship Committee Volunteering

Mayfield High School’s Citizenship Committee practiced good community stewardship recently by volunteering with Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) to clean up an area of high visibility near the Three Crosses landmark along U.S. Highway 70.

“Volunteer help from groups like the Citizen Committee makes a big difference,” said James Woods, Coordinator for KLCB. “COVID-19 has greatly impacted our normal schedule of clean-up events. We appreciate the efforts of the teens and commend them for their leadership and for serving as role models for their peers and community.”

Members of the Citizenship Committee who participated in the clean-up are Lian Machaen-Rueda, Emilie Dyer, Natalie Gomez, and Gisele Ramirez. The clean-up was done prior to the New Mexico Office of the Governor’s emergency public health order “shelter in place” directive. The small group followed COVID safety guidelines by wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

Groups that are interested in doing future clean-ups can call KLCB at 575/312-0531. Clean-ups will be scheduled when current restrictions are lifted and in compliance with NM Department of Health COVID safety guidelines.

Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) will provide trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and pick-up tools free of charge for individuals or small groups doing a voluntary clean-up. Supplies can be picked up in person from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, 304 W. Bell Ave. Look for the KLCB canopy or call 575/312-0531 to request supplies, receive a location in need of assistance, or to report an area for litter removal or graffiti abatement.
