[ARCHIVED] Larry Nichols Named to Region XI International Code Council

Larry Nichols

City of Las Cruces Community Development Director, Larry Nichols, was recently appointed to the Executive Board of Directors for the Region XI International Code Council (ICC).

The Four Corners Chapter of Region XI includes the states Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. Nichols is among 18 members who will serve on the Executive Board.

“An appointment to an ICC Regional Board is a milestone for code officials,” Nichols said. “It will benefit the state of New Mexico and the City of Las Cruces to have a voice on the ICC Region XI board for matters related to code adoption, training, education, and personnel certifications.

Nichols is the City of Las Cruces Building Official and had previously served as the Building Official in El Paso, Texas, and Yuma, Arizona.

The International Code Council develops building and fire codes and codes official certifications, not only throughout the U.S. but internationally.  ICC Region XI promotes the health, safety, and welfare of all people, buildings, and properties through quality code development, education, building inspection, and code enforcement in a professional and ethical manner.

All residential and commercial buildings and structures in Las Cruces are permitted with ICC codes and inspected by ICC certified inspectors.

Also, the ICC Region XI Board is developing programs, such as the COVID Response Center, to help with remediation and economic recovery related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter sent earlier this year, the ICC Region XI Board asked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to continue to classify state and city Building and Fire departments, as essential services during the pandemic.

Code officials ensure that all buildings – including healthcare infrastructure – are built and maintained for occupant safety. During the pandemic, ICC codes and inspectors are overseeing the safe construction of temporary structures to provide medical capacity and ensuring the maintenance of hospital ventilation disinfection systems.
