[ARCHIVED] Anonymous Donor Gifts Musical Instruments to Weed and Seed Program

Weed and Seed Recipients

The Holiday spirit is alive and well in Las Cruces this year. The City's Weed and Seed program participants have been gifted with musical instruments this year.

An anonymous donor purchased twelve acoustic guitars which were delivered to A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven on Tornillo Street this week.

The donor wished not to be credited for the wonderful presents, but sent a message indicating the gift sent was twelve Beginner Acoustic Guitar Starter Packages purchased from Amazon and the donor offered the approximate delivery date.

The Weed and Seed program is a City of Las Cruces program which has been around for 20 years. It initially began with the Police Department as a program to weed out anything bad, like crime or drugs, and seed with the good things in life, like the program that exists today. About five years ago the program was transferred to the Parks & Recreation Department. The program serves young people in the community and gives them a place where they can gather in a safe environment and engage in educational activities and life skills in addition to recreational activities.

Around this time of year, there are usually 60 participants registered for the program but because of COVID-19, Weed and Seed is currently only offering tutoring sessions, four times a day, in 90-minute sessions, with five participants per session. Weed and Seed also serve about 150 dinners from 4:30 - 5: 30 p.m. Monday - Friday.

The City is grateful for those wishing to enrich the City's youth who otherwise might not have the opportunity to learn an instrument.
