Las Cruces police arrested a man suspected of strangling his girlfriend and using a boxcutter to threaten her life during an argument last weekend.
Scott Andrew Lee Perez, 26, of the 1800 block of Webster Avenue, is charged with one third-degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member, one fourth-degree felony count of aggravated assault against a household member, a fourth-degree felony count of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.
Investigators learned Perez and his girlfriend of one year were arguing Friday evening, May 24, and into Saturday morning. At some point during the argument, Perez is accused of grabbing his girlfriend’s throat and strangling her. He’s also accused of wielding a boxcutter knife and threatening to kill her if anyone came to her defense.
Investigators believe Perez also destroyed two cell phones that his girlfriend had in her possession.
About 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, police were dispatched to the residence after a witness heard screaming coming from the couple’s room.
Perez was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held on a $10,000 bond.
