[ARCHIVED] Geometric Aljamia "Spring Break Camp"

Geometric designs

Explore art, culture, and science during “Spring Break Camp” from the Las Cruces Museum System. Inspired by the exhibition Geometric Aljamia campers in grades 1-8 spend a week learning about the richness of Arabic culture, art, and geometric design. Camp takes place virtually via Zoom March 22-26, 2021. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. Registration is $10 per person and must be completed in person at the Museum of Nature & Science between Tuesday, February 23 and Wednesday, March 17. For more information about the camp or registration, email education@las-cruces.org or call 575-522-3120.

All activities are virtual and camp registration includes a pick-up kit with all of the necessary activity supplies. Monday, March 22, campers meet online for a virtual welcome and introduction from museum educators. Tuesday through Thursday campers complete a new activity each day on their own. Friday, all campers meet online again for a virtual show-and-tell of their completed projects. There are two sessions with assigned meeting times.

Participants learn to use a compass and protractor to explore tessellation patterns and create a geometric tile design with the Museum of Nature & Science; make rubbing plates with geometric designs for printmaking with the Museum of Art; and learn about the richness of Arabic culture and philosophy by making a Hamsa, which is a cultural symbol of peace that brings good fortune, health, and happiness with the Branigan Cultural Center. All activities are appropriate for all age groups. Campers are invited

to a virtual tour of the exhibition, Geometric Aljamia, at the Museum of Art which inspired the camp activities.

The exhibit Geometric Aljamia acknowledges connections between Europe, the Mediterranean basin, and the Middle East. The exhibition revisits the ongoing impact of Islamic art, science, and philosophy throughout the world today, and is toured by Wylie Contemporary, Inc.

The museums are located at 411-501 North Main Street.
