[ARCHIVED] "Geometric Aljamia: A Cultural Transliteration" at the Las Cruces Museum of Art

Geometric Aljamia A Cultural Transliteration

Join the Las Cruces Museum of Art for a new exhibit - Geometric Aljamía: A Cultural Transliteration, on display through April 17, 2021. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Las Cruces Museum of Art has instituted new procedures for visitation to ensure the health and safety of our staff and guests in accordance with the public health order. Geometric Aljamía will be open for viewing by appointment only – call (575) 528-3330 or email education@las-cruces.org to reserve your spot!

Geometric Aljamía is a cross-cultural collaboration that addresses how Medieval connections between the Islamic world and Europe during the Golden Age of the Islamic Civilization (8th Century-13th Century) continue to be relevant and vibrant in the 21st Century.

The exhibit features six international and national artists - Mohammad Saleh Amin and Tamim Sahebzada (Afghanistan); Jorge Benitez and Reni Gower (United States); Hanane Korchi (Canada); and Julia Townsend (United Arab Emirates and United States) who bring together different styles of artwork that embrace and celebrate the concept of sacred geometry and the perfection of geometric form found in the circle, square. The artists use a diversity of media to express these cultural connections, using papercuts, stencils, drawings, and models. Their individual artistic perspectives reflect the larger relationship that the West shares with the Middle East.

The Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Main St. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 36. For additional information, visit the website at museums.las-cruces.org or call (575) 541-2137. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. The museum abides by occupancy and group limits set by the public health order. Groups of more than 10 people will be asked to make reservations in smaller groups. Persons experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or who are sick will not be permitted to enter. Guests are required to follow health guidelines by wearing a mask over their nose and mouth, maintaining a distance of at least six feet from others at all times, and refraining from touching museum objects. The Las Cruces museums continue to offer exhibit information and virtual programming online through social media at Facebook.com/LCMuseums or Instagram.com/LCMuseums.
