[ARCHIVED] Great American Cleanup Set for Saturday, April 17

Great American Cleanup

The Great American Cleanup is a call-to-action to engage more volunteers and participants in public space cleanup, beautification and recycling events conducted by Keep America Beautiful affiliates and participating organizations nationwide. Once an individual becomes a Great American Cleanup volunteer with their local Keep America Beautiful affiliate, our goal is that they will be inspired to take that experience home to organize a similar, smaller-scale event in their own neighborhood.

The Parks & Recreation Department’s Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) and New Mexico Clean and Beautiful will host this year’s Great American Cleanup Saturday, April 17, from 8 a.m.to noon. A large number of volunteers will assist with a city-wide cleanup and collect litter at parks, schools, streets and business properties during the cleanup campaign. The event was cancelled in 2020, but in 2019 we had more than 900 volunteers from over 60 local groups and organizations collect more than 17 tons of litter during the annual event.

KLCB and the City of Las Cruces Parks & Recreation Department appreciate the community pitching in to pick up trash during the past year and encourages those who do so to observe COVID-19 safety guidelines of staying in small groups, practicing social distancing, wearing face coverings, and keeping hands clean.

Trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and pick-up tools will be made available if requested. These items can be picked up during the week of the event, April 12 – 16 from 8 a.m. to noon at the KLCB office at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center (304 W. Bell Ave), near the corner of Bell and Linden Ave. All volunteers will get a free t-shirt when they pick up supplies.

Local affiliates and partnering organizations, volunteers and corporate sponsors play a key role in the success of the Great American Cleanup.

KLCB will be at Young Park, 850 S. Walnut St. from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the morning of the event, to provide supplies, information and volunteers can turn in paperwork after the cleanup. To register online go to the City of Las Cruces web site at: https://www.las-cruces.org/FormCenter/Parks-Rec-Forms-14/Great-American-Clean-Up-Registration-103..

For more information how to register contact James Woods, Keep Las Cruces Beautiful Coordinator at jwoods@las-cruces.org or 575/528-4506.
