[ARCHIVED] Bicycle Registration Events Planned for Saturday

Bike

Las Cruces police will host two free bicycle registration events Saturday, simultaneously, at Ride On Sports and Outdoor Adventures.

The bicycle registration events will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Outdoor Adventures, 1424 Missouri Ave., and at Ride On Sports, 2001 E. Lohman Ave.

Bicycle owners are encouraged to take their bike to either location where police will record the bicycle’s serial number and owner information. If no serial number can be found on the bicycle frame, police will provide the owner with a registration decal that can be affixed to the bike.

Registering bicycles allow police to have a record of ownership in the event the bike is lost, abandoned or stolen.

Each year, the Las Cruces Police Department takes in 60-100 bicycles that are reported as found, recovered or unclaimed property. Bicycle owners must provide proof of ownership to retrieve a bicycle from LCPD’s property room. The majority of found or recovered bicycles go unclaimed and are ultimately sent to auction.

By policy, LCPD must keep a bicycle in the property room for a minimum of 90 days before it is sent to auction.

Officers from the Las Cruces Police Department’s Community Outreach Unit will be available Saturday at both locations to register bicycles, and answer questions about bicycle safety and bicycle theft prevention. The registration events are free at both locations and open to all residents of Las Cruces.

Bicycle registrations can also be completed at the Records window of the Las Cruces Police Department, 217 E. Picacho Ave., on Mondays and Thursdays for a nominal fee of $1.50 per bike.
