[ARCHIVED] Las Cruces is a Bicycle Friendly Community at the Bronze Level

Bicycle Friendly Community

The League of American Bicyclists again has awarded the City of Las Cruces the Bronze Level status as a Bicycle Friendly Community.

This is the second time the League has recognized the City at this level, and the next step is to build on this success to get to Silver status.

“This decision involved careful review of (the City’s) application and supplemental materials, as well as consultation with local cyclists and bike advocates,” said Amelia Neptune, Director of Bicycle Friendly America, for the League of American Bicyclists. “This award is presented only to communities with strong commitments to bicycling.”

The City’s application for Bicycle Friendly Community designation was submitted by the Community Development Department. The designation supports the City’s Vision to become a more vibrant and livable city, as outlined in the Comprehensive Plan, Elevate Las Cruces.  City leaders and planners, with support from bicycling advocates in Las Cruces, hope to further the goal of improving bicycling in our community by following the recommendations in the Active Transportation Plan and building a network of bike facilities.

Las Cruces’ bronze designation is valid for four years.

Las Cruces joins 487 communities across the U.S. in the movement for safer streets and better bicycling for everyone. The award recognizes Las Cruces for its commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging healthier and more sustainable transportation choices. More than 850 communities applied for the recognition.

The award coincides with National Bicycle Month, which is during May. National Bike to Work Week is from May 17 to May 23, and Friday, May 21 is National Bike to Work Day.
