[ARCHIVED] Police Academy to Host Physical Fitness Exams on Saturday

The Las Cruces Police Department will conduct five physical fitness exams on Saturday morning for individuals who are considering a career in law enforcement.

The physical fitness exams will be done in five sessions, 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and 11 p.m. Saturday, May 22 at the running track at Centennial High School, 1950 S. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. Applicants can choose any one session to attend.

Applicants should arrive well before the session they choose to attend. Prospective applicants are encouraged to wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the four physical fitness standards, set by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. The basic entry standards – the same for men and women – include:  

  • 1.5 mile run in 15 minutes, 14 seconds or less.
  • 300 meter dash in 71 seconds or less.
  • Minimum 27 sit-ups in less than 1 minute.
  • Minimum 15 pushups in less than 1 minute.


Anyone interested in applying for the next Las Cruces Police Department’s academy, scheduled to begin in January 2022, is encouraged to attend one of the physical fitness exams. Academy staff and recruiters will be available for assistance and to answer questions about academy life and careers in law enforcement.

Las Cruces police continue to recruit for the department’s next academy. Applications must be received by July 4. Early submission of applications is encouraged.
