[ARCHIVED] Two Artworks Become the Latest Additions to the City's Public Art Collection

Munson Senior Center

Two artworks have been installed at Munson Center, 975 S. Mesquite St., and have become the latest additions to the City of Las Cruces’ public art collection. The artworks were funded by the Art In Public Places (AIPP) program, through the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs/New Mexico Arts (NMAD).

“Blue Corn,” by Julianna Kirwin, was installed May 5, 2021 at Munson Center. The art piece is 60 inches long by 24-inches high. It is a woodblock relief print inspired by blue corn found particularly in northern New Mexico.

A second work, “Happiness is the Path,” by artist Cathy Haight, was installed at Munson Center on May 18, 2021. The framed batik, 30 inches by 40 inches, depicts a scene of vibrant Cottonwood trees in New Mexico in autumn.

An ad-hoc selection committee selected artwork from the NMAD juried catalog using state funds made available from AIPP. One percent of funding from general obligation bond (GO Bond) site improvement projects is designated for public art. The budget for the two paintings was $3,400.

The City Art Board, Las Cruces Public Art program, and Munson Senior Community Center hope to have an open house event later this year, when programming has resumed at Munson Center, to officially “unveil” the artwork to the public.
