[ARCHIVED] Montana Play Street

Montana Street Play

Saturday morning, June 5, 2021, Montana Avenue was the site of a second Play Street in a pilot initiative to explore new and exciting ways to bring opportunities to get active to neighborhoods.

Dubbed the Montana Play Street, a stretch of Montana Avenue, from south Espina Street to Esperanza Street, and a few surrounding streets, were temporarily converted into a space for the neighborhood to come together and get active. Play Streets create a space for play and give opportunities for walking and biking, while maintaining physical distancing by temporarily closing neighborhood streets to through traffic.

The Montana Play Street was met with support and enthusiasm by many residents who participated in the morning’s activities. Play Streets are a way of opening city streets to the community, which many cities have begun embracing, particularly as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the first initiative of its kind in Las Cruces, residents are able to safely socialize, get active, and generally enjoy the outdoors.

At the Juniper Play Street, in May, and the Montana Play Street, residents have provided positive feedback, expressing interest in more events like these.  Keep an eye out for updates and more Play Streets as the initiative evolves to meet the wants and needs of our community’s neighborhoods.
