The next Listen to Your Art lecture with the Museum of Art will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 25. Danila Rumold will discuss the life and work of German-born American artist Eva Hesse. Danila Rumold is an abstract artist who creates process-based drawings, collages, and installations. Using botanical color and other natural, raw materials, Rumold’s eco-conscious choices reassert the primacy of materiality. Incorporating daily routines and domestic tools, Rumold seeks to integrate art and life, making visible women’s unseen labor. Influenced by ancient art, as well post- minimalist artists like Eva Hesse, Harmony Hammond, and Susan Rothenburg, Rumold’s work is abstract and paired down to the basic elements. Selected exhibitions include, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, WA; SFMOMA Artist Gallery, San Francisco, CA; and the Painting Center, New York, NY. She has had two solo exhibitions at Exhibit/208 (2018) and Harwood Art Center (2019) in Albuquerque, NM.
The life and work of Eva Hesse has influenced several generations of young artists since her death in 1970. Guest artist and speaker, Danila Rumold will be talking about how Eva Hesse’s expression of her life experiences, as a refugee from Nazi Germany, shaped her principle aesthetic disposition toward all that happened to her. Specifically, Rumold will discuss how Hesse reflects on her life events through the language of materials and process and the exploration of paradoxes. Through closer look at dichotomies which Hesse dissolved such as: expressionism/ minimalism, painting/sculpture, absurd/rational, feminist/anti-feminist, Rumold will explore the integration of art and life. The thread between these explorations, which will be put to question is, how can women artists today make work from their experiences, while not resorting to autobiography and being limited by issues of identity politics.

Guests who may be experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or who are sick will not be permitted to enter. Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a face covering unless otherwise required by City or State requirements, or by the latest official guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in which case they must follow that guidance.
