The New Mexico State University Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is pursuing a new type of surface, called the Binary Surface or BiS, that changes the way liquids boil. When liquids boil over a surface, substantial amounts of heat can be transferred from the surface to the liquid without causing the surface to heat up more. Boiling on surfaces has applications for cooling electronics in cloud data centers and military systems where high temperatures can cause system problems. When a large amount of heat must be removed from a small area through boiling, it encounters a crisis called the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) limit at which the vapor bubbles merge to form a thin layer on the surface and this phenomenon obstructs the boiling process. The new experimental surfaces are promising for tackling this crisis and could change the way we use water to cool technology.
Dr. Krishna Kota is an associate professor at New Mexico State University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research interests include studying the interactions of fluids with tailored and engineered surfaces, heat transfer, health, and energy systems. This research was sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation.
