Las Cruces police will host two Vehicle Identification Number etching events for Utility Terrain Vehicles this Saturday.
The two events – both free of charge and specifically for UTVs – will be held Saturday, July 10:
- 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at The Power Center, 2000 N. Telshor Blvd.
- Noon to 2 p.m. at Las Cruces Motorsports, 2125 S. Valley Dr.
Las Cruces area residents are encouraged to have the VIN etched on their UTVs to discourage auto thefts and to help law enforcement correctly identify a stolen UTV or parts from a UTV that may be stolen.
The Las Cruces Police Department has the ability to etch VINs on glass, metal and plastic and in such a way that it is either visible to the naked eye or only visible with the assistance of an infrared lighting source.
Having a vehicle etched with its VIN discourages auto thefts because it's more difficult to part-out and sell parts that can be tracked using the VIN.
Saturday’s VIN etching program is courtesy Community Outreach officers from the Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico State Police, The Power Center and Las Cruces Motorsports.
