[ARCHIVED] City Council Special Work Session, Work Session on August 23

City Council

The Las Cruces City Council will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2021 for a Special Work Session with the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission, to be followed by a regularly scheduled Council Work Session.

The Special Work Session will focus on an update of the City of Las Cruces Development Code.

In March 2021, the City entered into a contract with Freese and Nichols, Inc., (F&N) to amend the development codes. The project is anticipated to take two years to complete and consists of three phases.

The first phase included of stakeholder interviews, a virtual open house, and the gathering, review, and analysis of applicable codes and policies. The result for the first phase is a development code diagnostic that outlines structural modifications to the existing code and recommendations for various content changes.

The code diagnostic is meant to guide in the drafting of the land development code during the second phase of the project. At Monday’s Special Work Session City staff and F&N will inform City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission of the contents of the report and receive feedback on any of the recommendations and any potential gaps.

At Monday’s Work Session, City staff will present a status update to the Council on the process to implement the City Strategic Plan.

On March 15, 2021, City Council adopted the City's Strategic Plan for 2021 to 2026,  which identified and prioritized a set of goals, including many from Elevate Las Cruces. City staff has begun the process of realigning the adopted plans of Elevate Las Cruces and the City’s Strategic Plan through a set of actions, which will ultimately become part of an organization-wide implementation program.

Additionally, during Monday’s Work Session, City Council will be presented with an economic outlook for the City’s third quarter of 2021. The third-quarter 2021 Las Cruces Economic Outlook will primarily focus on employment and inflation conditions within the City.

Monday’s Special Work Session and City Council Work Session will be televised live on CLC-TV, Comcast Cable channel 20. The Special Work Session and Work Session will also be available online at clctv.com and at YouTube.com/clctv20.
