[ARCHIVED] Listen to Your Art at the Las Cruces Museum of Art

Zoe Spiliotis

The next “Listen to Your Art” lecture will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 17.

Zoe Spiliotis will discuss the life and work of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. The lecture will be conducted through Zoom and is accessible with the following link and password: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86331165517, password: 337908.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and spiritualist who, by 1906, was creating radically abstract paintings unlike anything seen before. Her bold, colorful and imaginative non-objective paintings predate Kandinsky, Malevich, and Mondrian, who are still regarded as the pioneers of abstract 20th-century art.

The resurgence of this secretive painter's body of work invites a reevaluation of modernism, its development, and the art historical timelines predominately shaped around men.

Zoe Spiliotis is currently an Assistant Professor at El Paso Community College, in El Paso, Texas. Her abstract artwork is based on mathematical principles exploring the principles of repetition, symmetry, movement, and visual perception through geometric patterns.

Her works reflect a recurrent theme in philosophy, theology, art, and mathematics, which is the ongoing struggle to grasp the ideal and the transcendental and to encompass the infinite. She obtained her master’s in fine arts from New Mexico State University, a bachelor’s in fine art from Moore College of Art & Design, and an Associates in Graphic Design from Valencia Community College.

Zoe Spiliotis' work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in Italy, Austria, and Japan. She has also created public artworks and murals in New Mexico, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
